Overseas Education, Visa and Immigration

If you have ever thought of studying or working abroad, then you would know about the lengthy process for seeking information, researching the right university, getting all documents together correctly, the dependency on consultants and the expenses involved.

We can do some groundwork by visiting the relevant websites, to gather information and ensure the process goes ahead as smoothly, safely and inexpensively as possible. While this sounds like a very obvious tip, it is not easy to find the right website, in the internet maze. So we have done the research for you and listed some important websites and information.

Canada

To learn about studying in Canada, the types of Immigration programs and Visas required and how to apply, visit the website of Canadian high Commission in India: http://geo.international.gc.ca/asia/main/ It has detailed information on the education system in Canada, tuition and living costs, scholarships and the requirements for applying.

It also has complete information about the various classes under which immigration is allowed, forms required to be filled up and the office for submitting the completed documents.

UK

Whether you want to study in the UK or go there for work, all visa details are available on http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/. You must be able to show that you have been accepted on a course of study at an educational establishment that is on the UK's Department for Education and Skills (DfES) Register of Education and Training Providers. You can search the register on the DfES website at: www.dfes.gov.uk/providersregister

You can travel to the UK as a prospective student for up to six months to arrange your studies. You will need to show that:

  1. you intend to enrol on a course of study within six months of arriving in the UK
  2. you can pay for your course, support yourself and your dependants, and live without working or needing any help from public funds, and
  3. you intend to leave the UK when you finish your studies or when your permission to stay ends if you do not qualify to stay in the UK as a student.

Note: you should not buy a ticket, or pay all or part of the cost of a study course if your visa application being delayed or refused would mean that you lost your money.

Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP)

UK has a Highly Skilled Migrant Programme to provide talented people with exceptional skills the opportunity to come to the UK to seek work.

HSMP is currently the only points-based immigration route into the UK. Applicants will be judged against new points criteria designed to better reflect the likelihood of migrants' labour market success and to bring the most highly skilled to the UK, helping to meet the Government's strategic objective to boost the UK economy. Complete details are available at http://www.workingintheuk.gov.uk/working_in_the_uk/en/homepage/schemes_and_programmes/hsmp.html
