Searching for the job

Email etiquette for your job search

  • Remember, whether you are sending your resume to a search consultant or to an HR Manager, address them both formally, not like your long lost buddies. Although this may seem very obvious, lot of jobseekers send messages with the subject line, "Hi" or "Just for you”.
  • Make the subject line specific to the type of job that you want to apply for.
  • Do not send your resumes in bulk. Make the effort to address to each person. You don’t send resumes in bulk in print medium, do you?
  • Address and sign your e-mails. Yes, the To: and From: say who's corresponding, but beginning the message with the person's name "XYZ," or "Dear XYZ," helps customize it. Sign your name, "Sincerely ABC”.
  • Do not forward your resume Nobody has the time to open any number of forwards, to access your resume.
  • Do write a small customized mail including your current and expected salary details, time needed for joining, and your contact phone numbers.
  • DON'T TYPE IN ALL CAPS. TOO INTENSE, and you appear too lazy to type properly. This is still a written medium. Follow standard writing guidelines as a professional courtesy.
