Career Resources Introduction Every few years some new sector emerges as the Hot Sector, with a wide range of new jobs. This happens due to evolving economy, technology, demographics and various such reasons. There was a time when computers / IT were a completely new field, and a vast population still worked in Manufacturing. People were hesitant about IT sector jobs. They didn't want to be Technical Support Engineers or Programmers. Today, these are the hottest jobs. Earlier, parents were hesitant to let their daughters work in hotels / airlines and neither did boys work in hotels. Nowadays, everybody wants to be an Airline Steward/ Stewardess. Later, the same thing happened with BPO. There are always a lot of misconceptions about industries and job profiles. The key to a successful career is to remember that job skills are transferable. Everybody has certain core skills and certain transferable skills, which can be applied to nearly all industries. It doesn't pay to close your mind to new sectors as it is always the emerging industry that will have the best paying jobs because they require the talent. Early birds, i.e. people who join in the early stages, normally benefit a lot from the growth opportunities, as the industry matures. Very frequently, the only thing that comes between a good satisfying job and us is our own blinkers and misconceptions. Currently hot sectors While BPO sector (including its cousin KPO) is still growing, Retailing is the industry to be in and hospitality has also emerged as a favourite, in no small measure due to the impending Commonwealth games. Healthcare, Realty and Construction are other obvious choices. With the emergence of so many new sectors, Advertising, PR and Media are also on a growth curve. As the population in India is getting younger, there are education and skill development requirements. Therefore, Education and Training are also growth sectors.
